New Justice Minister in favour of right to possess weapons

23.01.2009

New Justice Minister Andrzej Czuma says he is strongly in favour of the right to possess arms for defensive use Poland.

“I believe that the right to possess weapons at home should be extended. Decisions on that matter should be made by local governments,” explained the Justice Minister who takes his post in the Ministry today after the resignation of Zbigniew Cwiakalski on Tuesday.

“The right to defence is not as evil as it is often presented. I am deeply concerned that courts in Poland interpret this right in such a narrow way,” Czuma added.

Czuma said that as Justice Minister he will try to create as little new regulation as possible, will try to change the methods of evaluating prosecutors and to motivate them to concentre on persecuting serious crimes. He also wants to improve the way courts treat victims of crime.

Czuma added that his priority will be to separate functions of the Justice Ministry and Attourney General. (jm)
