The CIA has decided not to reveal any documents concerning Colonel Jozef Swiatlo, a high-ranking official of the Ministry of Public Security of Poland, who, since 1948, was working for western special security services and is known to have been used by the CIA for ‘propaganda purposes.’
Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) officials want to put Swiatlo on trial for crimes committed in the 1940s and 1950s. He is said to have contributed to the execution of about 150 soldiers of Poland’s Home Army (Armia Krajowa), the dominant Polish resistance movement in World War II German-occupied Poland. In the 50s, he was allegedly executed many tortures under Stalin.
On 5 December 1953, while in East Berlin, Swiatlo travelling on a subway and ended up in the West Berlin sector. He then is rumoured to have begun his collaboration with the Americans.
Swiatlo, at the time carrying documents on him about the heads of the Ministry of Public Security in Poland, informing Radio Free Europe about the regulations regarding the functionings of the Ministry.
If Jozef Swiatlo is indeed alive – and CIA document would provide this information – the IPN wants to issue an extradition warrant. (is)
