More and more companies in Poland have problems paying employees’ wages. Labour inspectors warn that the situation is likely to get worse.
In January the labour inspectorate in Wroclaw, south-eastern Poland, received as many as 103 complaints from employees whose pay has been suspended. In 2008, on average, there were only around 75 complaints a month - meaning an increase by 40 percent this year!
In the Masovia region, in central Poland which includes Warsaw, the number of unpaid salaries increased from 84 a month in 2007 to 131 in 2008, an increase of 56 percent.
Major difficulties are to be expected in industries which are involved in production for exports to the European Union, including car manufacturers, white goods or steelworks. (jm)
