During the first day of an informal meeting of NATO defense ministers in Krakow, the MOD heads concluded unanimously that one of the top priorities of the Alliance this year is guaranteeing security during the August scheduled presidential elections in Afghanistan.
This stand has been reiterated by NATO spokesman John Appathurai who voiced confidence adequate forces would be found by the countries taking part in the mission.
The Alliance defense ministers have also discussed the situation in Kosovo and methods of fighting piracy. John Appathurai revealed that a decision concerning a new NATO naval operation in the region of Somalia has been made at Thursday’s meeting.
During the second session of the Krakow meeting the Alliance’s defense ministers are to talk with their partners from non-member countries that support the ISAF mission in Afghanistan. The topic will be the future shape of operations by international forces in that country.
