Silesian collieries on warning strike

12.03.2009

A two-hour warning strike took place this morning in 16 mines and five plants of the Kompania Weglowa SA mining company in south western Poland, in protest against the lack of progress in ongoing salary negotiations.

The warning strike started at 6 am and lasted until 8 am. The miners decided to go on strike following a breakdown in negotiations on Tuesday.

The company has agreed a 4-percent pay-rise - trade unions are demanding a 7-percent minimum, in keeping with recent pay hikes of executives at the company.

Kompania Weglowa SA is the largest mining concern in Europe, employing over 60,000 people.

The next talks, with participation of a mediator, are planned for March 19. (jm/pg)
