Workers blockade road, south east Poland

20.03.2009

About one hundred trade unionists from the Solidarity Trade Union have been blocking the entry road to Przemysl, south - eastern Poland, as a part of a protest against the dismissal of over 730 people in the Forte and PKP Cargo companies.

The protesters, carrying union banners, have been crossing the streets, shouting “Thieves” and “We want work, not protest.”

Only privileged vehicles have been allowed to pass, while others cars have been redirected to bypasses as determined by the police.

The president of Przemysl with the Agencja Rozwoju Przemyslu (Industry Development Agency) have applied for the Forte factory, a furniture manufacturer, to be included part of a special economic zone, which would reduce costs and save the workplaces.

However, no response by the Forte board has been issued as yet. (is)
