Twelve Poles evacuated from Italy

07.04.2009

Twelve Polish citizens have been evacuated from the Italian region of Abruzzo after the earthquake which killed over 100 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Poland’s consul in Rome, Jerzy Adamczyk, said that the Polish diplomatic services have tried to track down all the Poles who lived in the shattered region. He is now convinced that they managed to contact all the people who wanted to return to their home country.

The Poles were transported to Rome, from where they are to travel to Poland. Many require assistance as they have lost everything in the earthquake.

The Polish consulate remains in constant contact with Italian authorities both local and central. For the time being there has been no reports of any Polish citizens among over 100 fatalities.

The quake measuring over six on the Richter scale destroyed hundreds of buildings in central Italy at 3.30 CET yesterday morning. The earthquake’s epicentre was three miles from the city of l’Aquila, in the mountainous region of Abruzzo some 100 kilometres north of Rome. (jm/pg)
