Polish parties to spend millions on electoral campaign

08.04.2009

In spite of the economic crisis political parties in Poland intend to spend millions of zlotys on campaigns for the elections to the European Parliament in June.

The ruling Civic Platform and the largest opposition Law and Justice party both plan to spend over nine million of zlotys (some two million euros) which is the largest possible amount of money allowed by electoral law. The left wing Left Democratic Alliance will spend only three million zlotys less.

“We have enough money. I hope that our campaign will appeal to voters, even though it won’t be Byzantine in style,” said Grzegorz Dolniak, who is responsible for the campaign of Civic Platform.

Law and Justice also assures that it is prepared for the battle for seats in the European Parliament. “There is no final decision on the electoral fund yet, but it will be around 9 million zlotys,” confirms Adam Bielan, the party’s spokesman.

A considerable share of the electoral campaign budget will be spent of television commercials. A single spot at prime time costs around 50 to 60 thousand zlotys (11-13 thousand euros). (jm/pg)
