The European Commission has withdrawn their official complaint from the European Court of Justice against Poland for violating the NATURA 2000.
The complaint was filed in 2007 when Poland had plans to build a highway through the Rospuda Valley, near the northeastern town of Augustow. The expressway would have violated the framework of the European Ecological NATURA 2000 network.
On 24 March, the Polish government announced the decision to reroute the expressway to bypass the nature reserve and will instead run through fields near the village of Raczki.
The measure was officially approved by the Polish Minister of Environment, Maciej Nowicki. As such, the European Commission announced today that they will withdraw their complaint because Poland has not met suffienctly environmental protection measures set out by the EU. (mmj)
