Some 6, 000 young Jews from around the world as well as around 1, 000 Poles have come to the former Nazi German concentration camp of Auschwitz to take part in the March of the Living
The three-kilometre-long route leads from the Auschwitz site to the crematoria of Birkenau. The Marches of the Living in tribute to the victims of the Holocaust have been organized annually since 1988. The first march attracted some 1, 500 Jews from 13 countries. In 2005, the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, some 20, 000 people, including Polish and Israeli prime ministers, took part in the march.
