US President honours five Poles at Capitol Holocaust ceremony

24.04.2009

At a ceremony at the Capitol ending the Holocaust Days of Remembrance, US President Barack Obama honoured five Poles, holders of the Righteous Among the Nations medal, thanking them for their heroic courage.

With the American participants in the ceremony, the Poles lit six candles symbolizing the 6 million Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis in World War 2. Each candle was lit by a Medal holder, a Holocaust survivor, and a US Congress representative.

The Polish delegation to the observations at the Capitol also included two survivors. 6 thousand Polish citizens have been awarded the Righteous Among Nations medal by the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem for rescuing Jews from the Holocaust.
