British PM’s visit opens week of top diplomatic meetings

28.04.2009

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown held talks with his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, earlier today.

Items on the agenda included recession, energy security and collaboration in Afghanistan, ahead of elections taking place in the country. Gordon Brown also aimed to promote the candidacy of former Prime Minister Tony Blair for head of the European Council.

During a conference following the meeting Donald Tusk said the politicians had discussed the situation regarding the forthcoming elections for the European Parliament: "We discussed our collaboration in the process of forming a new political order within the European Union following EU's parliamentary elections and we exchanged views on the matter, and one can see that Poles and Britons share a common opinion on the majority of issues concerning the European Union."

The two leaders have also reached agreement on collaboration in the strategies aimed at fighting climate change and preparations ahead of the upcoming climate conference in Copenhagen.

The British prime minister is to meet President Lech Kaczyński later in the day.
Gordon Brown’s visit comes as a stopover following a one-day tour of Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the official embarked on a new strategy aimed at fighting insurgency in the border districts of the two countries.

The visit of the British Prime Minister in Warsaw is the first in a series of diplomatic meetings of Polish politicians with European top officials this week. Other European leaders scheduled to arrive in Poland include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Prime Ministers Mirek Topolanek of the Czech Republic, and Jan Peter Balkenende of the Netherlands, and Silvio Berlusconi of Italy, giving the Polish government the opportunity to work out a common strategy with the EU leaders ahead of the European elections.
