Former Polish Foreign Affairs Minister and an Auschwitz survivor, Władysław Bartoszewski has been named by French Prime Minister Francois Fillon a member of the Legion of Honor. According to French officials, the professor Bartoszewski received the honor for his “courageous commitment” to save Jews during World War II, his resistance to the Nazi regime and his postwar efforts to built a united Europe. The ceremony took place at the French Embassy in Warsaw.
The Legion of Honor, France's elite national merit society, was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802.
87-year-old Bartoszewski is now an adviser to Poland’s government on Germany. Other Polish recipients of the honor include the late professor Bronisław Geremek, renowned actor Daniel Olbrychski and marshal Jozef Pilsudski. (di)
