Sejm in session

06.05.2009

The Lower House of the Polish Parliament is opening a three-day session, where its members are to resume debate over the ban for convicts on running in elections.

They had previously agreed that individuals convicted for indictable offences cannot run for Parliament.

During the last sitting, the commission responsible for amending the Constitution turned down the amendment prohibiting former members of communist-era secret services to be in Parliament, forwarded by the right-wing opposition, the Law and Justice party.

Two-thirds of votes from at least a half of the statutory number of attending members of parliament are required to pass the bill.

Other items on the agenda include amendments to the health care system, the new media bill, infrastructure and environment.
