Polish prison system is ninety years old

11.05.2009
Today marks the 90th anniversary of the creation of the Polish prison system. To mark the occasion a special commemorative session will take place in Warsaw’s Royal Castle with the participation of PM Donald Tusk and Sejm speaker Bronislaw Komorowski.
The operations of Polish prisons were established by virtue of the decrees issued by marshal Jozef Pilsudski in 1919. The documents were among the first legal acts regulating the functioning of state services in Poland between World War One and World War Two. They remained binding for 10 years and became the foundation of Poland’s penitentiary system. (di)
