Poland watches closely as voting for the world's seven most stunning natural marvels in the second round of the New 7 Wonders contest, winds up today.

Poland's contenders, the Mazurian Lake District, and the Białowieża Primeval Forest - both UNESCO heritage sites - stand a good chance to make it to the next round in the categories "landscape, ice formations" and "forest, national parks, nature reserves" respectively, says deputy environment minister Janusz Zaleski.

"Białowieża is the last natural forest in the North European Plain, full of very old trees, and bison. The Mazurian Lake District is also an oasis of natural beauty, far less polluted than similar regions of Western Europe. It boasts picturesque landscapes, lakes, and forests. All this is so beautiful that it's only natural that everyone should vote for the two natural landmarks," says the minister.

Deputy head of the Polish Tourist Organization, Elżbieta Wąsowicz-Zaborek, has stressed that securing a place in the next round would be a success for Poland and could boost tourism not only in those regions, but throughout the entire country.

Internet users may place their votes until midnight. The list of top 77 nominees resulting from the voting will be cut down to 21 candidates. The finalists will be announced on 21 July. (ab/pg)
