The majority of Poles support the idea of a women’s party on electoral rolls, shows a survey conducted by PBS DGA.
The idea that political parties should devote half of all places on the electoral rolls to the national, European parliaments and local councils to women was conceived during the recent Polish Women Congress in Warsaw.
According to the survey, 61 percent of Poles support the initiative and 27 percent oppose it. 70 percent of women and 52 percent of men opt for the parity.
Contrary to expectation the majority of supporters of male-female parity are people with elementary education (72 percent) or vocational education (63 percent), not secondary (59 percent) or university education (42 percent). Inhabitants of villages and small towns want equal chances for women in politics by introducing parity (64 percent) more than those who live in big cities (57 percent).
The survey was conducted on 3-5 July among 1035 people.
Currently women make up 20 percent of Polish members of parliament and just eight percent of Polish senators. (mg/pg)
