Politicians should have regular psychological check ups

22.07.2009

Poland’s Ombudsman for Citizen Rights wants top politicians-to-be to take mental health tests.

Janusz Kochanowski suggests that candidates for the post of president, prime minister, or even a regular MP, to submit a certificate on their mental condition when applying for the position.

“One can have serious doubts about the mental abilities of some Polish politicians, judging by their statements and behaviour,” said Kochanowski.

The Ombudsman wants the proviso that politicians should be of sound mind be included in Poland’s Constitution or electoral law.

Kochanowski has not revealed which particular politicians he has in mind when speaking of psychological problems, but he assures they are easily recognizable and frequently appear on TV. Mass media, claims the Ombudsman, promotes divisive politicians, who quit often, “should be treated in an asylum”.

The controversial politician, Civic Platform’s Janusz Palikot has come up with a similar initiative, claiming that all politicians should be examined in relation to their physical and mental health, as well as declaring any addictions they currently suffer from. He has constantly called for the health of President Lech Kaczynski to be made public, for instance. (mg/pg)
