Report expected on 4th suicide in Olewnik case

03.08.2009

A final report is expected today from the Justice Ministry team investigating the alleged suicide of prison ward Mariusz K.

The man happened to be on duty at the time of the mysterious suicide of one of the convicts in the infamous and controversial Olewnik abduction and murder case.

The guard's death was the fourth suicide of a person connected with the Olewnik case and as such attracted special attention of law enforcement services.

According to preliminary reports, Mariusz K. committed suicide due to personal problems.

The now-famous Olewnik kidnapping-murder case began in 2001 when son of a wealthy businessman, Krzysztof Olewnik, was kidnapped for a ransom of 300,000 zloty (72,000 euro). The money was paid and Olewnik was not released but was tortured and brutally murdered in 2003. Investigation into the case seems to have been getting more complicated as there have been a total of four deaths of people close to the case and instances of stolen or lost evidence. (jn/mmj)
