Tatra tourist count

09.08.2009

Around forty Tatra National Park employees and volunteers have ended this year’s annual tourist count. The count was held all places of entry to the National Park in the Polish and Slovak Tatras.

In some locations, such as the trail leading up to the highest peak on the Polish side, Rysy, hikers were also asked about their mountaineering experience.

Director of the Park, Paweł Skawiński says that a similar count was done five years ago. It proved that one-fifth of tourists climbing Rysy were for the first or second time in the Tatras, and on their first or second day there, unprepared for the climate or for the effort. It was amazing that there were so few accidents, he said.  (EK)
