Poles happy to have a ‘stay-cation’

10.08.2009

Most Poles would prefer to spend holiday in their home country than abroad, even if they had enough money to pay for it, shows a survey conducted by GfK Polonia.

It is fashionable to spend holiday in Poland, claim 56 percent of Poles. Krzysztof Lopacinski, head of the Institute of Tourism, explains that Poles choose Polish holiday resorts, especially on the Baltic Sea, because more and more interesting events are happening there.

“In Sopot there are two summer music festivals; in Gdansk, a Dominican Bazaar and in Krynica, an opera festival. These events attract many people because Poles want to spend their holiday actively.” Lopacinski adds that the high value of euro discourages Poles from going abroad.

Most Poles would prefer to spend holiday in Poland even if they could afford going abroad. 51 percent of respondents prefer holiday in Poland and 44 percent in other countries, shows the survey. Even Polish celebrities choose Polish holiday resorts more often.

“Many people prefer to spend holiday in the proximity of their homes. Going abroad is usually considered to be a trip, not a proper holiday when you can truly relax,” says Professor Wojciech Lukowski.

“If the prices in Poland don’t go down, the number of people who will spend holiday abroad will increase. Surprisingly, a holiday in Egypt is cheaper than on the Baltic Sea and good weather is guaranteed,” says Jozef Ratajski from the Polish Chamber of Tourism. (mg/mmj)
