Driving from Dresden to Krakow has never been easier. Friday, the last part of the A4 motorway was opened, connecting Poland with the German highway network.

“We have shortened the way to Europe for Poles,” said Deputy Prime Minister Grzegorz Schetyna, who, together with Infrastructure Minister Cezary Grabarczyk, officially opened the new part of the road.

The 51-kilometer long part of the A4 motorway runs from Zgorzelec to Krzyzowa. It is part of the pan-European traffic corridor starting in Calais. France, and running through Brussels, Dresden, Wroclaw, Krakow, Kiev to Kazakhstan.

The construction lasted for 28 months and cost 237 million euro. The majority of the money was provided by the European Union. Polish workers needed to build nine bridges, 36 viaducts and 55 passes for different types of animals. (jg/mmj)
