Poles in the dark about voting

17.08.2009

Two months after elections to the European Parliament, almost fifty percent of Poles do not know that they vote for candidates directly, writes the daily Gazeta Wyborcza, quoting the results of a poll  by the OBOP polling center for the Institute of Public Affairs.

The poll’s results show that only 57 percent of respondents answered correctly that eurodeputies are elected by Poles.

Twenty-one percent claim that they are elected by other European parliamentarians, while every twentieth said that the selection in made by the government of the president. Over fifteen precent were unable to give any answer to the question of how MEPs are elected.

Also, among those Poles who consider themselves followers of a particular party, the biggest knowledge of the election process to the EP was shown by supporters of the liberal Civic Platform (PO) – three-fourths while the smallest among the conservative opposition Law and Justice Party – fifty five percent.
