2-week nurse strike ends

17.08.2009

Striking nurses from the Specialized Hospital in Radom, central Poland, have resumed work today.

The nurses, who were joined in demonstrations by a delegation of nurses from neighbouring regions, had protested in Radom for almost two weeks demanding substantial pay raises.

Several prior rounds of negotiations with the hospital management were inconclusive because hospital authorities said that the clinic was in debt and could not afford increases.

A final agreement was reached over the weekend. The hospital will spend 1.2 million zloty (about 287,000 euro) for single pay-outs and payment of overdue insurance premiums for its 600 nurses and midwives. The offer, although not satisfactory, was accepted because no better solution was to be found at the moment – said Anna Trzaszczka, the head of the protesting committee. (di/mmj)
