Young offenders riot, Poznan

19.08.2009

Six people were injured, including three police officers  after rioting broke out in a juvenile detention centre in Poznan, central Poland.

According to Romuald Piecuch at the press office of the Police Headquarters in Poznan, the young offenders barricaded themselves on the third floor of the building. They had previously assaulted a supervisor with a plank and set barricades made of beds and tables on fire.

Firefighters, backed by the police, managed to contain the fire quickly, said a spokesperson for the Fire Services in the Wielkopolskie province.  Medical services and a total of seven fire fighting units took part in the operation.

The inmates made no demands. “A likely reason for the incident is that some of them were not granted a pass to leave the premises,” said Piecuch. “Five juvenile offenders, aged from 17 to 22, were detained. They are to undergo questioning today.”

There were 18 inmates on the premises during the incident. (ab/pg)
