Polish Muslims have started Ramadan, the month-long period of fasting and spiritual reflection.
Special prayers are to be held in the evening house in the historic mosques in Kruszyniany and Bohoniki, as well as in Bialystok in north-eastern Poland.
According to the Muslim Religious Union in Poland, there are some 5, 000 Polish-Muslims , the majority of them living in the north-east. The Muslim presence began around the 14th century in Poland, when Tatars settled in the country.
The number of foreigners of Islamic faith is estimated at some 20,000 who are mainly students, diplomats, businessmen and refugees. (mk/pg)
