Treblinka victims remembered

05.09.2009
A patriotic and religious commemoration ceremony is held today at the Museum of Combat and Martyrdom in Treblinka, at the site of the former German Nazi WW2 camp.

Participants of the ceremony, who include survivors of the camp, pay tribute to World War Two victims, especially those deceased in Treblinka. The Way of the Cross and a Mass have been celebrated today at the site. Other celebrations include survivors' speeches and the laying of flowers and candles.

The work camp in Treblinka was set up by German Nazis back in 1941. A year later, an adjacent death camp was set up. It was liquidated in 1943. The work camp was closed down only in 1944. It is estimated, that it took the lives of about eight hundred thousand Jews, mainly from the occupied Poland, but also from Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, USSR, but also Germany and Austria. Some gypsies and Sinti from Poland and Germany were also forced into this camp. (jn)
