Parliament has upheld the presidential veto to the media bill proposed by the ruling Civic Platform.
The largest opposition party, Law and Justice, supported the veto. The Democratic Left Alliance abstained and Civic Platform voted to overturn the veto signed by President Lech Kaczynski.
“The public media market needs regulation but different to that wanted by Civic Platform,” says Law and Justice MP Elżbieta Kruk.”First of all, we need a reform of finances, one which would make the media less dependent on commercial income and the whole market needs regulation pertaining to digitalization,” she said.
The media bill vetoed by President Kaczynski would have abolished the radio and television license fee and would have introduced funding of public media from the state budget.
Civic Platform failed to get the votes of two-thirds of MPs in the Lower House necessary to overturn the veto. (jn)
