Diplomatic scandal in Berlin?

12.09.2009

The spokesman of the government, Paweł Graś, confirmed that representatives of Poland have not received an official invitation to the November anniversary  of the fall of the Berlin Wall although the leaders of France, Russia, the US and Great Britain have already been invited.

According to Pawel Gras, Polish authorities will definitely participate in the event if invited.  At the same time he said he was not surprised with the German stand on the issue. "So far Germany has managed to effectively promote in Europe the knowledge that it was the fall of the Berlin Wall that initiated the end of communism.  So I am not surprised that they are at a loss now as to what to do after Poland's success in reminding the world where those changes had really started".

The office of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel would not comment on the procedure of inviting foreign guests to the ceremony saying it is not complete yet. It has been announced, however, that former president and Solidarity founder Lech Wałęsa will participate having been invited by the Berlin authorities. (di)
