Sports minister to resign?

05.10.2009
According to press reports, Minister of Sport Miroslaw Drzewiecki will resign, Monday, following accusations that he lobbied on behalf of the gambling industry.

Last week, leader of the ruling Civic Platform’s parliamentary party, Zbigniew Chlebowski resigned from his post in connection with the same charges made by the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

The two politicians are accused of meeting with two businessmen from the gambling industry, Ryszard Sobiesiak and Jan Kosek who asked them to lobby to change a new gambling bill which was to raise tax duty on gambling to pay for preparations for the Euro 2012 football championships to be staged in Poland and Ukraine.

Chlebowski and Dzewiecki both deny the accusations.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk was thought to decide the fate of Dzewiecki on Tuesday but the Rzeczpospolita newspaper is claiming this morning that the sports minister might fall on his sword before then.

Minister Dzewiecki will be giving a press conference later today. (pg)
