First snow falls on Polish mountains

13.10.2009
Twenty centimetres of snow fell on mountains surrounding the Zakopane resort in southern Poland overnight.

Temperatures dropped to minus seven, and meteorologists say that the snow covering in some areas could stay until Friday.

Tatra Volunteer Ambulance Service has issued a warning that hiking conditions could be very difficult, with some sections icy under foot. String winds and fog have reduced visibility, making trekking treacherous in some parts. (pg)
