UPDATE - The cold weather claimed its first victims in Poland, when three men, aged 63, 53 and 33, froze to death in the Podhale region of southern Poland last night.
Emergency services are clearing roads and damages caused by yesterday's heavy snowfall and winds.
The situation is slowly improving on the Baltic coast, as the flood risk decreased significantly around the coastal city of Elbląg.
Households across the country remain without power, said Przemysław Guła, head of the government Center for Security, yet the blackouts are being dealt with systematically.
Over 26,000 fire fighters were involved in rescue operations across the country, said Paweł Frontczak, spokesperson for the national fire services after being deployed to about 7,000 emergency calls.
According to weather forecasts, the snowfall and heavy winds are expected to die down on Friday. (ab)
