Poland's hospitals offering better treatment

20.10.2009

Hospitals are providing better care and the Cancer Centre in Olsztyn, northern Poland, is the best hospital in Poland says a new ranking.

Poland's top three multi-specialty hospitals are the Olsztyn medical centre, followed by the Regional Hospital in Kolobrzeg, on the Baltic Coast, and the Norbert Barlicki hospital in Lodz, central Poland.

The daily Rzeczpospolita ranked hospitals throughout the country based on quality of treatment, conditions for in-patient care and the financial condition of the institution. The paper reports that the first hundred hospitals in Poland show 700 points or higher, showing a significant improvement in overall hospital care in Poland.

“At least three-quarters of those hospitals ranked have positive financial rankings.  Just a few years ago, that figure was 12 percent,” stated Michal Bedlicki from the Centre for Health Care Quality Monitoring at the Health Ministry.

The Centre warns, however, that the future of Poland's hospitals is in danger as the “National Health Fund [NFZ] does not pay for patients who go over their coverage limit and that must hurt the financial conditions of hospitals,” added Bedlicki.  (mmj)
