Warsaw police envisage lower death toll on roads

28.10.2009

This year 314 people will die in car accidents in the capital of Poland, predict Warsaw policemen, a significant reduction on the previous year.

Policemen from Warsaw have issued a report, in which they determine what results they would like to achieve this year. Among others, polic want to reduce the number of fatalities on Warsaw roads by 8.9 per cent. They predict that, thanks to new measures, 314 people, instead of 344, will die in car accidents. Policemen also assume that 15.5 per cent of crimes will be committed by juvenile delinquents.

“The aim of the report is to check how efficient police offices are in Warsaw,” says Marcin Szyndler from the Warsaw Police Headquarters. However, he adds that it is impossible to plan a death toll because it depends on too many factors. “We can reduce the number of fatalities by increasing the number of policemen on patrol, introducing more severe punishments and prevention.

Critics point out, however, that it is hard to see where these improvements will come from. Just 423 policemen are patrolling Warsaw streets, which is only eight more than last year. 207 people have already died in car accidents in Warsaw and its suburbs this year. (mg)
