Pres. Kaczynski’s faulty Lisbon Treaty pen up for grabs
Today is the last day to place a bid for the faulty fountain pen which President Kaczyński was going to use to sign the Lisbon Treaty on 10 October.
The sale is being held on the Allegro internet auction web site – the Polish equivalent of E-Bay - with a current asking price of around 13,000 zloty (4,500 US dollars) Monday morning.
At the moment of ratification the pen refused to work and President Kaczynski signed the document with a borrowed ball-point pen.
The auction site contains a letter from the Presidential Chancellery stating that the pen is suitable for both “Euro-enthusiasts wanting to own the item which was supposed to be used for the document’s ratification, or indeed for Euro-sceptics, wishing to honour the moment as their own resistance to the Lisbon Treaty.
The pen is being sold as part of a charity auction for children with brain damage, and is being organised by the TVN Foundation’s “You’re Not Alone” programme. (jb)
