Stations of the Cross procession, Auschwitz

09.11.2009
Several thousand people have taken part in the annual Stations of the Cross procession at the former Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The participants followed a three-kilometre route from the so-called Gates of Death, through the camp’s barracks and to the ruins of the crematoria, to pray for the victims of all concentration and labour camps.

The memories of the survivors were read out along the way, and lights placed at the rail lines once used to transport prisoners.

The event, taking place on the first Sunday after All Saints’ Day, was first held in 1979, to mark the visit of Pope John Paul II on camp grounds. (ab)
