The number of teachers in Poland who abuse students physically and psychologically is growing, show statistics.
Students complain that teachers are abusive, skip classes or turn up to lessons drunk. This year in the eastern city of Lublin alone, six teachers were reprimanded because they used corporal punishment as a means of discipline.
In 2007, a disciplinary commission in Lublin received 13 motions to open procedures against teachers and in 2009 three times more. The number of complaints has also grown in the southern city of Krakow – which saw 20 motions in 2008, and 36 in 2009 - and in the central Mazovia region 17 motions in 2008 and 25 in 2009 were made.
According to law, teachers who overstep their powers can be punished by being reprimanded, made redundant or forbidden to work as a teacher. In 2008 a Krakow disciplinary commission reprimanded ten teachers, made three redundant and forbade one to teach. (mg)
