Wall comes down in Warsaw

09.11.2009
To the cry of “No more walls” young people from Poland and other European countries pushed down a replica of the Berlin Wall in Warsaw, Monday.

The happening was organized by the Robert Schuman Foundation and German Embassy in Warsaw, marking 20 years since the Berlin Wall was broke through and the end of communism in East Germany.

Five, grey, three metre tall polystyrene blocks were erected on one of the main streets of the Polish capital. Those passing were encouraged to write messages and graffiti on the symbolic wall - many wrote messages for those struggling for freedoms in Belarus.

“I am glad that we have had the opportunity, here in Warsaw, to take down wall,” said German Ambassador to Poland, Michael H. Gerdts. He said that the fall of the Berlin Wall was part of a common history between Poland and Germany.

"Together we brought down the wall. Today, 20 years later, we share a unique, close network of personal and family relationships. Together we are giving shape to a new Europe,” he said. (pg)
