Flu closes Bydgoszcz school
10.11.2009
The State Music School in Bydgoszcz, northern Poland, has closed down until Friday due to the large number of absent students who have caught the flu virus.
On Monday, less than 50 percent of enrolled students came to school, prompting the head of the school to seek permission from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage to close down for the rest of the week.
“We have, of course, complied with all regulations from the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate. We discuss health, distribute leaflets and teach preventative care and make sure that the bathrooms are well stocked with soap, paper and hot water,” says headmistress Ewa Staporek-Pospiech.
The head of the school adds that “there is nothing to fear. There are no more sick students than in previous years – it if just the common seasonal flu.”
According to the Kujawsko-Pomorskie superintendent of education regulations and Chief Sanitary Inspectorate regulations, schools are to be closed when there are less than 20 percent of students present or, in the case of nursery schools, less than 40 percent present. The Bydgoszcz school was forced to seek special permission to close. (mmj)
