Political saints in village church?
25.11.2009
Images of local authorities with halos have appeared on a church's stained-glass windows in the village of Dargoslaw, northern Poland.
Figures of the Four Apostles depicted in St. Mary’s church in Dargoslaw have been made to resemble local government authorities. Brojce's mayor, Wiktor Iwaniec, is portrayed as St Marcus; Dargoslaw village administrator, Zbigniew Kruk, as St John; Gryfice councilor, Bogdan Lakomy, as St Luke; and Brojce councilor, Jan Herman, as St Matthew.
The idea to transform politicians into saints came from the priest Radoslaw Urban, who is in charge of the church. Neither him, nor the “blessed” want to reveal how much they paid to be immortalized on church’s stained-glass window. The priest admits, though, that he did not ask his supervisors or parishioners for permission to use the images of local politicians in the church.
St Mary’s church parishioners are outraged and say they will not attend masses unless the priest removes shameful images. “It’s a profanation of a sacred place”, argues one of the faithful and others add: “How can you pray in a church, in which local politicians with halos look down at you”.
