25.11.2009

Filipinki  - Poland’s most popular girl group from the 1960s – celebrate their golden jubilee today.

The group, formed at the Commercial College in Szczecin in the northwest of Poland on the school’s 15th anniversary and later debuted on November 25, 1960 at a competition for young talent. The original set-up of nine girls was later reduced to seven.

The first Filipinki record sold 650,000 copies in the first months of distribution, a huge number back then in communist Poland. One of their trademark hit songs was devoted to the first woman cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova (see video below).

Filipinki finally broke up in 1974. (ek)
