Woman dies of swine flu

A 48 year-old woman at Olsztyn University hospital has died after contracting the A/H1N1 virus.

Since October 1, there have been 97 confirmed cases with the swine flu virus in the north eastern region, with six people seriously ill, a spokesman for the regional health inspectorate told Radio Olsztyn. Throughout the country over 700 cases have been confirmed by doctors with 15 deaths.

The World Health Organisation reminds that every year over 330,000 million suffer from flu viruses with over half a million deaths.

Meanwhile, three organisations, the Polish Paediatric Society, the Society of Experimental and Clinical Immunology and the Polish Society of Vaccinology are launching a campaign to encourage people tlo get vaccinated against flu, says Professor Ewa Bernatowska of the Children's Health Center. (pg)
