Government losing support
12.12.2009
The ruling Civic Platform party’s lead over Law and Justice has slipped to just eight percentage points.
Civic Platform would gain 34 percent of the vote if a general election was held this month, according to the CBOS pollsters. This is the narrowest lead Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s party has had over the opposition since the autumn of 2008 and the best opinion poll showing for Law and Justice, lead by former prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, since the elections two years ago.
Commenting on the poll results, Prime Minister Tusk said that every party in Poland would very much like to “have our weak rating”.
Support has also fallen for the Polish Peasant Party, Civic Platform’s junior partner in the ruling coalition, which, on four percent of the popular vote, would fail to qualify for representation in parliament.
The survey shows that turnout would be 48 percent. One in every three voters say they are determined not to take part in the elections. (mk/pg)
