Former communist functionary evades responsibility for killing 19-year old son of an opposition activist back in 1983.

Warsaw Court of Appeals quashed the prison sentence of Ireneusz Kosciuk, a former communist militia functionary guilty of beating a 19-year old boy to death back in 1983.

It was back in 1983, in communist Poland. Grzegorz Przemyk, 19-year old son of an anti-communist opposition member, was celebrating his high school exams, when he was arrested, taken to the communist police headquarters and beaten to death.

The direct and indirect perpetrators of the crime on Grzegorz Przemyk remain at large. Several attempts at bringing Przemyk's killers to justice have failed. Last year a verdict was passed sentencing one communist militia functionary, Ireneusz Kosciuk, to 4 years of prison. Now, a court of appeals in Warsaw quashed Kościuk's verdict.

Ireneusz Kosciuk was only 20 years old when he beat Grzegorz Przemyk to death - one year older than his victim. Until recently, the killer was still working for the Polish police. He now receives a high pension.
