Pope Benedict XVI will sign special decrees on Saturday on the “heroic virtues of Pope John Paul II” and the martyrdom of Father Jerzy Popieluszko, Polskie Radio has learned.

The documents are an extremely important step towards the beatification of John Paul II.

The Vatican has not commented on the reports, however.

To fully complete this part of the process leading to sainthood a second example of a “miracle” by the Polish Pope is required but beatification is expected either next spring or autumn.

According to church sources in Rome, the case of the beatification process of the Solidarity chaplain Jerzy Popieluszko will also be finalised next year. (pg)
