21.12.2009

President Lech Kaczynski is to decorate Cardinal Jozef Glemp, the recently retired primate, with Poland’s highest state distinction the Order of The White Eagle.

The ceremony is taking place at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw this afternoon.

Cardinal Glemp held the top office of Poland’s Roman-Catholic Church for 28 years. Three days ago the cardinal celebrated his 80th birthday and retired by Pope Benedict XVI. According to tradition, the title of Primate of Poland has returned to the Metropolitan in Gniezno, the country’s first capital in the 10th century.
