Government against positive discrimination for women

22.12.2009

Polish women are doing well in politics and they do not need parity to be active in public life, said Parliamentary Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski after the Congress of Polish Women submitted the draft of the parity bill to the Parliament.

They collected 120,000 signatures of support for their initiative. The project envisages that women will constitute at least fifty percent of candidates on electoral lists in elections to local governments or the European Parliament.

Speaking to Polish Radio this morning Mr. Komorowski said there is no need to open the doors to political careers for women by means of special laws. At the same time he remarked that many female parliamentarians are against the proposed bill but it will still be submitted for voting.

Members of the Congress of Polish Women who have drafted it hope the bill will be voted into law soon. They would like it to enter into force during next year’s self-governmental elections in Poland. (di)
