In search of a prosecutor general

05.01.2010

Poland’s National Judicial Board today starts interviews of candidates for the post of Prosecutor General.

This would be the first such official in Poland since 1990 not to combine the function with that of Justice Minister, when the Main Prosecutor’s Office was liquidated.

The two functions were joined following the agreements of the Round Table in 1989, as Solidarity had believed this would enable parliamentary control over the office.

Justice Minister Krzysztof Kwiatkowski said that 20 years on, Poland sees that a majority of European countries has rejected the model and separated a function that is political, i.e. Justice Minister, from Prosecutor General.

Among the candidates are five judges and eleven prosecutors. The interviews, which will be open to the media, are to continue until Thursday. (ek)
