According to the Polska daily Tusk is ninety percent certain he will not run in this year’s presidential elections.
In the next few days, the final discussions will be taking place within the Civic Platform party as to who shall be their candidate in September’s presidential election.
Polska writes that no decision has yet been taken but before going on holiday this month Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that he was “90 percent certain he will not be a candidate.”
Sources close to the PM say he is still hesitating and could change his mind at the very last minute. What is bothering Tusk, and making him delay announcing that he will not run for elections is the lack of credible candidate from within Civic Platform’s ranks.
A recent poll by Gfk Polonia puts Jerzy Szmajdzinski for the Left Democratic Alliance (SLD) on seven percent, Andrzej Olechowski on 10 percent, President Lech Kaczynski, who is expected to run again on 16 percent. Donald Tusk is the outright favourite with around 28 percent support in the first round of elections. (pg)
