Over 27,500 people in the southern regions of Silesia, Malapolska and Lubelszczyzna are deprived of electricity as a result of extreme winter conditions.
Malapolska has been most affected by the lack of electric supply. Over 21,000 people there remain without electricity and heating. In Lubelszczyzna the number of people who are deprived of electric power totals 1,000 and in Silesia 5,500, while yesterday the number exceeded 30,000.
The failure of power units in the south of Poland started a week ago and since then emergency service and fire brigades have tried to restore power. However, the number of power breakdowns has been growing because winter is still holding its grip. Electric power lines are broken by falling tree branches laden with snow or covered with ice. It is estimated that the region will be deprived of electricity until the end of the week. (mg)
